Winter has arrived on Oahu bringing its wonderful blessing of gentle rains and cool trade breezes. When the winter rains come, they are not the ever present daily blessing showers of the rest of the year, rather they are a time when a great grey canopy forms above the island and the sky drifts closer to the ground gently wrapping the islands inhabitants in a humid embrace. It feels as if sky, tired of being alone has come down to feel the warmth of the earth; it is a beautiful feeling. The rain falling from the sky brings a feeling of peace which has the ability to wash sad thoughts from the heart and mind and life’s stresses along with them. The fresh smells of a day long rain; when it cleanses the air, soaks the soil and cools the pavement is an unforgettable one. It triggers feelings so wonderful and so sensual that they are difficult to put into words. It is as if God has gently spoken in your ear saying; this is the smell of what once was and is a glimpse of what once again shall be. In Hawaii people do not rush for cover when a rain shower passes, instead they carry on their path, relishing the blessing from above. The feel of the rain on the face and the wind on the skin cools and refreshes and for a short time releases the mind from mundane thoughts. Seeing and hearing rain falling is deeply spiritual for me. Watching the rain from an open window opens my heart and mind allowing insights to pour in. Hearing the dripping of the rain from the roof after a shower has passed brings with it an awareness of the joy just experienced and a longing for the next shower to come.
I sat on the sun kissed shore digging my toes into the sand and feeling each grain nestle about them. My gaze was on the frothy wave’s that lapped upon the sand before me, much as they had done so many times before with the comforting cadence that comes with the certainty of the continuity of time. A sudden wave flowed gently over my feet releasing my toes from the sands warm embrace, and then as I watched its rapid retreat I was reminded that I would soon have to surrender to its sure advance.
